Mike Barker Associates, is rather different to other building services engineering firms. In that, we apply a Pragmatic Sustainability approach to buildings.

Our primary concern is helping our clients reduce fossil fuel use, but our designs also consider occupant health, the local and global environment, use by future generations, while still accepting the reality of financial constraints

Building Physics

BuildingPhysics is a professional practice focused on improving the profitability, comfort and safety of the built environment. With rising energy costs and a growing responsibility towards our environment, a new approach to designing, constructing and managing an efficient building is essential. They offer building simulation services ranging from daylighting and thermal analysis to smoke and fire modelling.

Building Physics help you take the guess work out of designing and/or improving your building. Mike Barker & Associates works closely with BuildingPhysics on the Engineering aspect of designing and/or improving buildings.

What is a Green Building? A green building is a building which is energy efficient, resource efficient and environmentally responsible- which incorporates design, construction and operational practices that significantly reduce or eliminate its negative impact on the environment and its occupants. Building green is an opportunity to use resources efficiently and address climate change while creating healthier and more productive environments for people to live and work in.

Putting this all into Practice... On a practical level, this encompasses the use of design, materials and technology to reduce energy and resource consumption and create improved human and natural environments. Specific green building measures include careful building design to reduce heat loads, maximise natural light and promote the circulation of fresh air; the use of energy-efficient air-conditioning and lighting; the use of environmentally friendly, non-toxic materials; the reduction of waste, and the use of recycled materials; water-efficient plumbing fittings and water harvesting; the use of renewable energy sources; and sensitivity with regard to the impact of the development on the environment.

LEED is an internationally recognized green building certification system, providing third-party verification that a building or community was designed and built using strategies aimed at improving performance across all the metrics that matter most: energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts.

EnergyPlus models heating, cooling, lighting, ventilating, and other energy flows as well as water in buildings. While originally based on the most popular features and capabilities of BLAST and DOE-2, EnergyPlus includes many innovative simulation capabilities such as time steps of less than an hour, modular systems and plant integrated with heat balance-based zone simulation, multizone air flow, thermal comfort, water use, natural ventilation, and photovoltaic systems.

Professional Affiliations

As a consultant, I need to be able to take in the big picture. No one should believe that they can get by as only an engineer, or an architect, for example. We need to expose ourselves to as wide a range of thinking as possible. In my case, as an electronics engineer in the built environment, I find that the control and automation of buildings involves just about every science and every professions imaginable. That is why I belong to so many organisations, a few of which are listed below.

I am an active member of these organizations – I proactively seek out others with similar interest as myself, and I find they often belong to other Professions. So the “cross pollination” of ideas is critical to my thinking.
